How to Streamline Onboarding in Your School

What is onboarding?

A textbook definition of onboarding is the process of bringing a new hire into an organization. This means everything that takes place between the job offer being extended and the first day on the job. In a successful organization, especially a school system, it means much more than that.

Organizations aim to increase retention and reduce turnover. This means  making sure that new employees have everything they need to be successful in their new role from the beginning. Taking the time to explain organizational culture and processes will ensure that new hires feel welcomed, rather than lost and overwhelmed. Especially in an environment as fast-paced as a school district, onboarding is more than hiring a new employee. It is the process of welcoming a new member to the team.

Why is onboarding important?

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” This expression is common and, in this instance, applies to the organization doing the hiring. Research shows that a strong onboarding program increases employee retention by 82%! New employees that feel supported and valued remain committed to their jobs, even in the face of challenges and changes. School districts are all-too familiar with that!

With school employees leaving their jobs in droves, it’s more important now than ever to ensure anyone who has decided to join a school community feels valued and validated in their decision.

Onboarding in 2022-2023

The start of the 2022-2023 school year brings with it challenges and opportunities, and schools and districts are resilient. Thankfully, there are still people choosing to join the school community! There are people joining schools and taking over classrooms for the first time. Some are new teachers that are just starting out,  others are career changers. Some are  simply long-time educators who are relocating or changing campuses. According to SchoolSpring, more than 126,000 school related jobs are open right now in the United States. That is a lot of transitions!

These new hires will have to shuttle from schools to central offices, working with resource staff and administrators. Imagine the stress that all of this running around creates!  The potential for mistakes and misplaced paperwork alone is stressful. During the onboarding process, countless documents need to move from one department to another and are often dependent on numerous people to ensure they are processed properly. Picture a recent college graduate having to navigate something like this for the first time in their life. It’s overwhelming, and at the end of the day, any single issue might mean a delay to instruction and continuity for students.

The onboarding process, sets the new employee’s tone for the remainder of the school year. Their satisfaction, trust, success, and ultimately their retention begins with this experience.
